With an affinity for textures, bold colors and flowers in her blood, Kendall Brown of ATL Petal Peddler loves to create a special and unique piece that her couples will remember forever. With a style that she has dubbed “classic southern with a twist,” her floral look does not disappoint.
Bustld: What do you think makes you different in your field?
Kendall: I started in wholesale, which makes me a little different. All of my product is farm direct, which gives a little more freedom with order process and more access for funky textures. Textures and bold color are the secret to being different. Also, I’m a third-generation florist. My dad was wholesales, and my mom and grandma were both florists. I’ve been inundated and surrounded by flowers for my whole life.
Bustld: How would you describe your style and ideal client?
Kendall: My style is classic southern with a twist. I love the classic elements that we used to see all the time. I like using flowers like magnolia, gardenia and hydrangeas but then mixing them with and bringing in funky stuff like proteas. I love to have a creative client. When they just give me a color palette and maybe ask for one specific flower and then gave me free range, it is the best. It’s like telling a painter what kind of paint to use … that defeats the point of their creative mind. Also, fashion-forward and stylish brides are the perfect client.
Bustld: Why do your clients hire you?
Kendall: I specialize in personals. Clients come to me because they want an amazing bouquet and that’s what I do well. I’m happy to do receptions but turning out that much of the same thing doesn’t have the same amazing jaw-dropping feeling. The best part of my job is to create that one special piece.
Bustld: What is the best part of being a florist?
Kendall: I’m always surrounded by beautiful things and great people, so what’s not to love? I also love adopting brides as friends because my brides are such great people. Also, it’s so fun to use creative energy and bring smiles to other people’s faces. When I petal petals, I bring joy.
Bustld: What's your favorite moment on wedding day?
Kendall: The best is when I first see the bride and hand her bouquet. That look on her face when she loves it and doesn’t have the words to express it is the best thing and those hugs that come after are the best ones. My second favorite is always the next day phone call or text from a couple about how much they love everything. It fills me with those good vibes!
Bustld: How long have you been in business? What is your business back story?
Kendall: I started with my dad in the wholesale division in 2011 and then a year after started the retail division. My mom and I did that part together and then my mom retired two years ago, so I rebranded as ATL Petal Peddler. It’s been a whirlwind since rebranding, but it was totally worth it. It’s nice to get away from old-school nostalgic style, traditional centerpieces and oasis cascades and all that. When I was doing just wholesale I was missing a creative outlet. When I got that creative side, it improved how I felt about the job and how I ran business. I found inner peace and inner joy and now enjoy what I’m doing, everything falling into place.
Bustld: Why weddings?
Kendall: Why not weddings? To be a part of that day for amazing couples and to be a part of that forever is amazing. Grandkids one day will look at photos and the couple will say our florist was the best. Florist sometimes have to deal with sadness like funerals and it’s nice to be a part of the beginning. It’s the romantic in me and satisfies the squishy girly emotional stuff.
