Before Katie Cotton was glamming up brides with Cotton and Rouge Company, she was glamming up celebrities in production and commercial hair and makeup. It’s that background, and the importance she places on making sure the timeline runs smoothly, that makes her and her team an easy choice. And, of course, they make all of their brides fell and look like the best version of themselves. Read on to learn more…

Bustld: What do you think makes you different in your field?

Katie: I approach makeup and hair differently. My background is in production and commercial makeup and hair. That was before I decided it was more fun to glam up every day regular people. I still make the bride feel like a celebrity client. We also know how important it is for all facets of wedding day to work. We check in with other vendors and work with them behind the scenes before wedding day to make sure the timeline runs smoothly. We make sure we work together to get things done and to make sure things go smoothly but still treat the bride like a celebrity star for the day and cater to her needs.

Bustld: How would you describe your style and ideal client?

Katie: I really like the bride to be the best version of herself. That might mean she’s a little more done than day-to-day wear. We talk to the bride ahead of time before getting started to ask how things normally are and then add on top of that. The things we suggest are to make sure we do what is best for photos and long wear but at the same time making the bride feel like herself, just better. We want every bride to be a heightened version of their best self. Everyone deserves to feel like a rockstar model. We like working with anyone and everyone. We are really for all ages and demographics. We love them all!

Bustld: Why do your clients hire you?

Katie: A lot of it has to do with how closely we work with other vendors. We get a lot of referrals from other wedding professionals. We are easy to work with and both vendors and couples know things will go off without a hitch. Brides hire us because they trust us.

Bustld: What is the best part of being a beauty artist?

Katie:I love making someone feel their best on the most important day of their life. We’re helping a bride choose what she will look like and it’s not a choice that should be taken lightly. It’s an awesome thing that brides trust us to make sure their vision of what they want to look like comes to life.

Bustld: What's your favorite moment on wedding day?

Katie: When I hand the bride the mirror. I don’t like to do hair and makeup in front of a mirror, so the bride can’t watch the whole time. So, seeing the first initial reaction is special. Especially once she puts her dress on and checks the whole looks together. When a bride gets a whole view of what she looks like for that day my eyes always tear up. I do love first looks, too. I think they’re awesome.

Bustld: Tell us your back story, and the back story of the business?

Katie: I started makeup and hair professionally full time in 2003 in Los Angeles on productions sets. After my first child was born we moved across the country and within a year I was doing services for bridal clients. I had done a few bridal services in LA before and after my own wedding, I really fell in love with it. It’s always fun to do makeup on pretty people but they usually don’t appreciate it as much, so I love doing it on brides who don’t have it all the time. They are more appreciative. I truly love the bride feeling like she’s the celebrity. I added to my team as business grew and availability became problem. I added my first artist 10 years ago and now we’re at 27 artists. We do between 500 to 600 weddings per year. It’s not uncommon for us to have over 10 weddings on a Saturday. I love having the team around, it’s nice to be able to bat things off one another. And it’s awesome that we can take care of a lot of brides. Outside of working with brides, I also love diving into the wedding industry world. I’m a member of so many organizations because vendor connections are important, and I love being able to share knowledge and work closest with others.
