When someone describes their job as the “best job in the world,” you know they are passionate about what they do. And that’s exactly how Jessica Charles of Jessica Charles Photography feels about being a wedding photographer.
“Someone once asked me how I liked being a wedding photographer and I instantly said, ‘it’s the best job in the world’,” she told. “I’m constantly surrounded by love and happiness. I get to be there on one of the most special days of someone’s life. I’ve been doing this for a long time and the emotions of the day still get to me every time.”
When the wedding is all said and done, she gets to relive the love that she experienced on wedding day through editing.
“Even when I edit, I get to relive the day and all the love that was there. Besides looking at love all the time, I also get to be the one who captures that for you to have forever,” said Jessica. “That is why I have the best job in the world. There is nothing else in the world I would rather be doing.”
And she shares that passion with each of her clients.
“I’m super personable and while I’m on my best professional behavior, I really do love becoming friend with my clients. I love finding out what we have in common and jumping off from there. That’s why I try to meet with all my prospective clients for coffee, with no pressure to hire me. I really want to get to know them and see how well we mesh,” she explained.
Her personality paired with her editing style is what makes her stand out in her field.
“I think it’s really popular to go bright and airy or dark and moody in editing right now. I try to be in the middle. My style has a lot of contrast and color. I want to be able to see detail in photos, especially in white things like a dress,” said Jessica.
Plus, she loves spoiling her couples. For example, she treats each of her brides to professional hair and makeup before their engagement session.
“This way my brides not only look their best, but they also feel their best. And who doesn’t love a little pampering,” she exclaimed.
For Jessica, the experience of being a bride is what encouraged her to pursue her passion.
“I got married in 2008 and was quickly obsessed with all things weddings. After my wedding was over, I still had weddings on the brain. I had always loved photography, so I decided this was the career path I wanted to work toward,” she told.
She worked hard at it and officially launched her company in 2009. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with the world of weddings.
“I love big, beautiful weddings, but my absolute favorite are small, intimate weddings where the couple’s core people are there to show their love and support,” she said.
But the moments that always get her? The first look and father/daughter dance.
“The first look is so special because there are so many jitters beforehand. Once the bride sees her groom the relief is palpable. All you see is pure genuine happiness,” Jessica said. “But I also personally love the father-daughter dance because it reminds me of my dad, who has passed since my wedding. All of these emotions come over me as I watch this super special moment between a dad and his little girl. It’s a memory they will hold on to forever.”
And those memories are ones that Jessica feels honored to capture.
