There’s no question that you are going to be taking a lot of pictures of wedding day. Between newlywed portraits, bridal party pictures and family pictures, you might be wondering where they all fit into an already busy day. Rob and Kristen Tesar of Rob + Kristen Photography are breaking down what photos happen when throughout wedding day.

Some of the very first photos of the day won’t even include people. Most times, your photographer will show up while you are still getting ready and cruise through your personal detail shots.

“We like to knock out as many detail shots as early in the day as I can before things get super bonkers,” said Rob and Kristen. “So, we like to ask our clients to put together a bag of their invitation suite, their rings and pretty much anything that they want photographed that's a paper good or any special jewelry that I can add into their details like shoes, and dress.”

After the details are captured, don’t be surprised if your photographer starts capturing some candid getting ready shots. Once everyone gets dressed, there are two routes a photographer usually takes depending on if you are doing a private first look or not.

Private First Look Timeline

3:00 – 3:30 First look and newlywed portraits

3:30 – 4:00 Bridal party

3:45 – 4:00 Bride and bridesmaids

4:00 – 4:15 Groom and groomsmen

4:15 – 5:00 Down time / photographer set up time

5:00 – 5:30 Ceremony

5:30 – 5:50 Family

If time allows, you may even want to squeeze in family pictures before the ceremony and not have any pictures to worry about after the ceremony.

If you choose not to do a first look, then your timeline will likely look like this:

No Private First Look Timeline

3:45 – 4:00 Bride and bridesmaids

4:00 – 4:15 Groom and groomsmen

4:15 – 5:00 Down time

5:00 – 5:30 Ceremony

5:30 – 5:50 Individual family photos

5:50 – 6:05 Bridal party

6:05 – 6:30 Newlywed portraits

Each photographer will have their own way of doing things. It’s important to talk with them about what the schedule looks like and come up with something that works for the both of you!
