Laid-Back Wedding “Festival” Weekend

Anna Dill + Ryan Thomas | Jul 8, 2017

Anna and Ryan met the modern way, via the internet, and they ended up being neighbors which was so fun for them! While on a trip to New Orleans, they decided they wanted to get married and, unbeknownst to Anna, Ryan already had a ring! To make it even more special, it was Ryan’s grandmother’s heirloom wedding band and Anna couldn’t have been more thrilled!

For their wedding, Anna and Ryan were inspired by really maximizing time together with friends and family and a bohemian, “as you wish” theme evolved. They chose Deerfields, a 940-acre retreat outside of Asheville, North Carolina, because it offered camping and a variety of laid-back activities for their loved ones.

Anna said, “We kept a lot of the trimmings simple so that we could be present and just spend time with people who traveled to be with us.There was so much visiting over the weekend and because so many people camped, it really felt like a little festival!”

She and Ryan chose a neutral color scheme, perfect for the tranquil, natural surroundings of their mountain venue. Their ceremony site was decorated with a garland of ferns and hanging décor. Anna, Ryan and their guests braved the rain and the two said their “I dos” under an umbrella and sealed it with a kiss! Everyone embraced the weather and put a literal meaning to the phrase “dancing in the rain” as they took pictures and celebrated the happy newlyweds.

The reception took place in a covered, open-air pavilion. Anna and Ryan incorporated a New Orleans big brass jazz band and a parade to pay homage to that special New Orleans trip where they first decided to get married! Guests enjoyed a family-style dinner and mixed and mingled over great food and even better conversation. Kegs full of local beer along with a slushee machine, mint juleps and lots of rose added to the merriment. The wedding weekend concluded with a food truck brunch, the perfect end to a celebration-filled weekend.

When asked her wedding planning advice, Anna suggests, “Build in downtime to your wedding weekend, plan for unstructured time when people are just hanging out and waiting together. It rained unexpectedly and intensely for an hour before our outdoor ceremony and everyone had to huddle on this covered wrap around porch and just hang out for an hour for the rain to pass -- everyone said that was one of their favorite times because they were enjoying catching up and meeting people. It was and is one of the sweetest memories of my life. The slower the better!”

Congratulations to the newlyweds!
