Booking a Baker 101

By Bustld Pro Team | Jan 10 2019

Choosing a wedding baker is definitely a fun thing to check off the list. But as with every vendor, you want to make sure you do your homework (and hire one of our vetted bakers, of course!).

Timing

Typically, you want to startlooking for your baker around the six month mark.If you have your heart set on a particular baker, you could start the search as early as eight months. If you are a little more flexible, five months before wedding day is sufficient.

Tasting

Book appointments with at least two baker so you can make a comparison. Most of the time, these appointments will include a tasting. Some tastings are complimentary, while some have a fee associated with it. Make sure you know ahead of time how many people you can bring, and any costs associated with the tasting.

Before your tasting:

  • Pick flavors that you're excited about and that you, most likely, will want to include in your cake. And don’t forget to ask if there is a signature flavor you shouldn’t miss!
  • You'll want to bring inspiration pictures with you.
  • It's also a good idea to bring pictures of your dress for inspiration.
  • Have an open mind!

Questions to Ask

These top-5 questions will help you decide who to book in addition to taste:

  1. What are the delivery and set up fees for my venue?
  2. Do you use buttercream or fondant? If fondant, do you make it yourself?
  3. How far in advance do you make your cakes?
  4. Are your wedding cakes ever frozen?
  5. Will you place my cake topper?

Once you’ve picked your baker, make sure you consider delivery fees, a delivery time, a cake stand rental (or purchase) and cake table location at your venue.
