A New Tradition, Sabering Champagne Bottles, to Celebrate this Love Story

Julia + Wesley |

Sage Green and Lilac Elegantly Rustic Country Club Wedding in Greensboro, North Carolina

Julia and Wesley met through a mutual friend who, thinking the two might hit it off, invited them both to an evening of grilling by the pool with a group of friends. Their friend was right, and Julia and Wesley clicked from the very first moment that they met! They spent the next day hanging out by the pool together and from then on, they started texting and talking to each other every day.

Their relationship blossomed, and it eventually became time for Wesley to start planning the perfect proposal! He purchased the perfect ring and tucked it away in his golf club cover and, although he was convinced Julia found it while cleaning, she swears she had no idea!

One Thursday night, Wesley made plans to “casually” take Julia out on a date and texted her during lunch to ask her to dinner; however, Wesley had a weekly tradition of going to Mexican with a friend of his so knowing this, Julia had already made alternate dinner plans. Although this freaked Wesley out a bit, he didn’t give up! Julia ended up being so busy at work that she had to cancel her plans and even missed several of Wesley’s calls. She finally got in touch with him on the way home and the two decided to do a super late dinner after Julia’s evening run.

Since it was too late to take her to the restaurant he had originally chosen, Wesley changed his mind and decided to scrap his plan of proposing to Julia at dinner. While she was out running, Wesley set up a sweet display on the counter including pictures of them, candles, and an adorable message written in jelly beans that said “marry me.” As Julia walked in and turned the corner, Wesley got down on his knee and proposed! Crying super happy tears, Julia hugged him and said “yes” and the two celebrated by popping a bottle of champagne (with a saber!) and ordering cheap takeout.

Julia shared, “He was worried I knew and I kept telling him I would not have made plans with my friends and then gone for a run if I thought that he was going to propose!” It was the perfect sweet surprise proposal!

Julia and Wesley had a picture perfect wedding at the Starmount Country Club near downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. The classic country club setting was the perfect complement to the couple’s rustic theme. The glittering chandeliers and twinkling lights of the venue added an elegant touch to the décor that featured burlap, wooden crates, mason jars and greenery. It was the perfect fit for the couple because Wesley is an avid golfer and Julia had grown up taking part in promenade lessons and other various activities at the club over the years. Julia and Wesley fell in love with the venue’s rolling green landscape and lush foliage and chose a beautiful room full of sunlight for their ceremony.

Julia wasn’t sure at first what direction she wanted to take as far as a wedding theme, but she and her planner came up with a beautiful sage green and lilac color scheme and added bright pops of yellow via sunflowers. Green and purple floral additions tied the color palette together and filled the venue with an effortless beauty.

Prior to the ceremony, Wesley and Julia were able to share a moment together and enjoyed the sabering of a champagne bottle on the golf course (in keeping with tradition of their engagement night).

Julia was stunning in her lace sweetheart gown with its high neck, lace overlay and capped sleeves. She accessorized with tear dropped hoops borrowed from her aunt and was honored to wear Wesley’s grandmother’s jade ring as her something old. Julia completely took Wesley’s breath away and the two looked absolutely perfect together!

The ceremony took place in a beautiful room with gleaming hardwood floors and large side-facing windows that overlooked the lush golf course. The décor was kept simple as the space is beautiful on its own; small sunflowers and baby’s breath adorned wooden crates and simple greenery plants highlighted the altar. The minister choice added a personal touch to the day and Julia and Wesley were thrilled to have the man who had been the youth group leader for Wesley’s parents be the one to marry them!

The reception space had the most festive feel to it with the twinkle lights and happy bright sunflowers that were everywhere. Mason jars with burlap ribbons were filled with the sunny flowers and created a warm and welcoming feel to the grand ballroom. The tables were covered in sage and lilac colored tablecloths and were decorated with floating candles, natural looking flowers in mismatched bottles, and tree truck centerpieces.

Julia absolutely loves candy as dessert, so a candy bar was a must! Pastel colored candies and cupcakes provided a sweet assortment for guests to enjoy.

One of the most anticipated moments of the day took place at the reception – the first dance. Julia and Wesley had taken dance lessons and had worked really hard on perfecting their routine… they absolutely nailed it!

During the reception, the newlyweds snuck off with their photographers, The Nixons, to take some solo photos together as the sun set over the golf course. It was one of the most special moments of the day as the newlyweds reveled in their new commitment to each other.

After dancing the night away with friends, Julia and Wesley ran out into the night under a sea of sparklers to begin their new chapter as husband and wife! Their day was everything they could have dreamed it to be.

“The best part about planning a wedding was that it brought me closer to friends and family,” said Julia. “I called my friends more often to ask questions and seek advice… On the day of, everything will be perfect and all the minor details that seem so huge at the time are really just minor details. Involve friends and family in the planning and enjoy the time you spend with them while doing it.”

Congratulations, Julia and Wesley!
