Sound-Side Vintage Bohemian Coastal Wedding with Fun College Traditions (Smirnoff Ice-ing, anyone?)

Kaitie Burton + Jared Thomas | Apr 21, 2018

Kaitie and Jared met at a party in college and they hit it off from the start! Flash forward four years and Jared was planning the perfect proposal. Jared invited friends and family to secretly join the couple while they took a walk by the waterfront in Little Washington, North Carolina. He knew it would be the perfect place to propose. With friends and family watching in the distance, Jared popped the question on the walk and asked Kaitie to marry him! Not only is having family and friends there to witness the proposal a special moment to share, but the couple was able to get pictures of the whole engagement (Jared had one of Kaitie’s friend’s take pictures of the entire thing)! The entire group then went to dinner together to celebrate and the two excitedly began planning their perfect wedding.

A year to the date of their engagement and again on the waterfront, Kaitie and Jared got married on April 21 overlooking the sound at Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina. The couple wanted their wedding to be very “vintage bohemian” with lots of neutral, earthy colors and rich greenery.

“Simple was key for our wedding. We wanted it to feel natural and not overly decorated,” said the bride. “Our wedding was outside, overlooking the sound, so we already had a gorgeous backdrop. Everything else involved greenery, simple florals, vintage doors and a wooden archway.”

Their seaside ceremony took place at The Country Club of the Crystal Coast overlooking the gently lapping sound. Another thing Kaitie knew she wanted was to be barefoot -- so that's exactly what happened for her and her bridesmaids as they walked down the aisle. The girls all wore nude colored dresses, but each with a different neckline. Jewelry was kept simple with pearl earrings that matched the pearl barefoot sandals that the bride gifted all the girls. It was perfect for their coastal ceremony!

Something else perfect? Kaitie’s gown! The sweetheart neckline Justin Alexander wedding dress was covered in delicate lace details and a jeweled bodice. And let’s take a moment to honor that train! The sprigs of baby’s breath in her hair added the perfect touch of bohemian bridal elegance. She wore crystal tear drop earrings with a matching bracelet and no necklace to keep all eyes on the dress!

The gentleman wore navy Michael Kors suits with brown leather shoes and matching suspenders. The best part? The hidden American flag socks all the groomsmen were wearing that were a gift from the groom.

The aisle was lined with white rose petals along with hanging lanterns filled with baby’s breath and greenery. A wooden archway served as the backdrop for the couple’s “I dos” and was outfitted in beachy white linens and two large floral arrangements full of greenery and white roses.

After the ceremony, while guests headed over to enjoy cocktail hour and the final touches were put on the reception space, the couple spent a few minutes alone soaking it all in.

“The most special moment of our wedding day was the few minutes that we were alone right after the ceremony. We weren't alone much our entire wedding weekend. So, having those five minutes to take in what just happened and realize the significance of it, was priceless.”

When it was all ready, the reception space at the country club carried over the natural, breezy feel from the ceremony. The room was gorgeous, yet not overly decorated. Kaitie and Jared’s antique sweetheart table was outfitted with vintage chairs, romantic candles and vines draping the floor. The guest tables were draped in clean white linens and decorated with lanterns, candles and lush greenery. The gold chairs featured a sheer gold bow tie-back and were the perfect finishing touch to the gold place settings and neutral menus. White hanging paper lanterns added the perfect bohemian touch and paired perfectly with the beautiful sheer fabric hanging along the ceiling.

The couple opted for a “naked” caked and it was absolutely stunning! It truly embodied the natural bohemian feel of the day and was “perfectly vintage” with just a few simple white roses accenting the layers.

Once the reception began, the party didn’t stop. The couple has a very “vivacious group of friend and family” so the reception was one for the books. Full of longtime college friends and family members, the group had some fun to say the least. The bride and groom even upped the ante when the bride decided to play a harmless little trick on the groom…

Kaitie, Jared and their college friends have a long running game of “ice-ing” each other which involves Smirnoff Ice and a whole lot of laughs. Of course, Kaitie knew she had to include the fun tradition in their wedding day.

“Naturally, I tucked one into my garter so that when Jared had to go take it off... well, you know how it goes... he had to chug it in front of everyone,” Kaitie said. “Try chugging a warm malt liquor drink in front of 200 people without stopping or gagging! It's a good thing my husband loves me. Everybody got a good laugh from that.”

To end the perfect day, Kaitie and Jared opted for a sparkler exit before heading off on their honeymoon to the beautiful beaches of Jamaica!

Congratulations, Kaitie and Jared!
