Carolina and South Florida Come Together for this Wedding Complete with Bar Cup Favors

Emily Quatromoni + Jonathan McMurtie | Jun 23, 2018

Emily and Jon’s love story began when they unknowingly crossed paths in November 2012. Emily was attending the University of Maryland and served as an athletic trainer for the team. In her second year at the program, she had the opportunity to travel with the team to their final game of the season against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She had applied to be a part of the Tar Heels’ graduate program for the fall so she was very excited about the chance to visit her dream school. Upon arrival, she found the home team’s football athletic training room and inside were three of the school’s training students, including Jon! She was so excited and overwhelmed to be there that she barely noticed Jon. Fast forward a year where Emily was accepted (yay!) and attending UNC. She was volunteering for the football camp when Jon strolled on to the field. Emily eagerly introduced herself to him and the rest was history!

Later on in their story, it was any normal Sunday with Jon, Emily and her roommate hanging out discussing going on a hike after church. Jon asked Emily’s roommate to join them to “take some pictures” and after a surprisingly difficult hike, they finally reached the waterfall. Emily insisted she wanted to get in the water, so Jon followed along (little did Emily know that he had managed to slip the ring in to his pocket!). They took a few pictures and then Emily started to pull away, still contemplating he water. Jon said her name and when she turned to look at him, he was down on one knee asking her to marry him! Emily couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect setting for a proposal and they two couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day!

The ceremony took place in a beautiful garden in front a seashell and ribbon backdrop, handmade by Jon and his dad. To add to the personal touches, Jon’s uncle officiated as the two read handwritten vows. One of the best moments of the day was when Emily and Jon got to see each other for the first time as she came down the aisle.

“We were both excited, nervous, and just ready to be married and see each other,” said Emily.

The reception took place inside a big red barn and the beachy Florida feel was brought to life with shades of blue and green sea glass. Carolina blue was sprinkled throughout the color scheme while sprigs of blue, yellow, green and white wildflowers in mismatched vases filled the tables. Sunflowers and blue hydrangeas added a summery pop of color while market lights washed the barn in romantic lighting. Guests were treated to a signature cocktail, Jell-O shots for Emily and Old Fashioneds for Jon, at the beginning of cocktail hour. One of the couple’s favorite personal details of the day was their “He’s Not” cups from their favorite bar in Chapel Hill.

“They recycle them once they are used,” said Emily. “Between my friends and I, we were able to collect and clean enough for people to use throughout the night and take home as a favor. Many of our guests told us that we stayed true to ourselves on our wedding day and they loved it!”

The entire day was full of so many special moments and personal touches, from a surprise mother/daughter dance for Emily’s mom, to handmade invitations and décor, everything was perfectly captured by Rebecca Hicks Photography.

Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. McMurtie!
