Coastal Chic Meets Southern Elegance

Jul 22, 2019

A neutral color palette with coastal blues paired with wood and gold elements to create this Southern and elegant styled shoot at Lowndes Grove in Charleston, South Carolina

On a warm summer day in South Carolina, wooden and gold elements set the mood for a Southern styled shoot —with an elegant, sophisticated twist. A waterfront scene complemented the coastal blue hues in the color palette, which also included soft neutrals and lush greenery.

“The look I was going for when I created the mood board was something Southern with a fun and elegant twist,” said the photographer.

Starting with the invitation suite, every detail was perfectly aligned with the coastal chic vibe. White deckle-edged papers were embossed with beautiful handwritten calligraphy, and complete with baby blue envelopes stamped with a wax seal. The couple’s vows were written in sky blue booklets, tied together with bone-colored linen ribbon, and the layout was adorned with sprays of fresh eucalyptus.

When the model-bride debuted her bridal look, she was glowing in an ivory, sleeveless gown with a plunging neckline and gorgeous lace bodice. She twirled, revealing a romantic open back and full tulle skirt. Her blonde curls were twisted back into a low bun updo, and she completed the look in a pair of soft, blue suede pointed heels. How is that for “something blue?”

In a classic black and white tuxedo, the groom looked effortlessly handsome. He wore a pair of sleek patent leather shoes and a boutonniere made of sprigs of various greenery to complement the bride’s bouquet. Together, they radiated pure love, elegance and happiness. And with a setting this picturesque, it’s hard not to.

For the bouquet, the florist arranged a medley of white flowers to enhance the blue tones in the décor, including cream garden roses, ivory roses, white Italian ruscus and sprays of fresh myrtle and eucalyptus.

The picture-perfect couple posed for a series of photos outside the beautiful, historic manor with white brick, columns and a wraparound porch. Between the natural light, coastal backdrop and stunning architecture, every picture was dreamier than the last.

Surrounded by live oaks, palm trees, desert plants and clear blue skies, the natural beauty of the location really brought the vision of the shoot to life. In the distance, a long dock with a gazebo at the edge added extra charm to the setting.

In one area of the lawn, rows of King Louis XVI chairs were set, with antique lanterns lining the aisle, to create the most romantic and intimate ceremony moment. Nearby, a cozy lounge area was in place with an oriental rug, round upholstered accent table, and a pale blue upholstered sofa with plush cream and steel blue pillows.

On a brick patio, a whitewashed wooden farm table was set with a tablescape that was the perfect combination of Southern elegance and coastal chic. Instead of doing a large centerpiece arrangement, the team went with greenery that was intertwined with a unique oyster runner, the real stunner of the whole day.

“My favorite parts were the flat lays and the table!” said the photographer.

At the place settings, there were wooden chargers and a set of bone-colored dinner plates, along with ivory flatware, classic glassware and coastal blue napkins. Gold and acrylic candle holders and a soft blue fabric ran along the center of the table, along with the handmade oyster runner.

“The oyster runner was the main point of the inspiration and everything fell around that,” said the photographer. “I made the runner by hand and I felt like it gave a coastal yet Southern vibe.”

On a piece of sky blue deckle-edged paper, the menu was written out in white calligraphy and stamped with a white wax seal. Sitting on a round, wooden cheese board, the menu was accompanied by miniature, fluffy biscuits on a banana leaf.

Rounding out the menu was, of course, the wedding cake. The single-tiered vanilla cake sat on a white ceramic stand, next to two blue candlesticks and a set of champagne glasses. With textured frosting and a bed of white rose buds perched on top, the cake was the best kind of finishing touch to the day.

While the shoot was in action, a live artist was stationed by the farm table to capture the scene. Her finished piece of art was a dreamy image of the table, with the manor in the back, brought to life by every color in the color palette, adding in a pop of bright, happy pink.

After a day full of laughing and dancing in the glimmer of summer light, the couple posed for a few final shots through the breaks in the big green palm branches—capturing a moment that we’d sure like to relive again and again.
