Started on the Elementary School Bus

Rachel + Nicholas | Dec 24, 2018

Outdoor, boho inspired southern engagement shoot in Columbia, South Carolina

Rachel and Nicholas met when they were kids living across the street from one another and rode the same bus to elementary school almost 20 years ago. Rachel and Nicholas’ sister became a part of the same friend group and even attended some birthday parties together, but it wasn’t until years later that the couple formed their own relationship.

Although Rachel and Nicholas practically grew up together, it wasn’t until their high school statistics class where their true story began. After their assigned exam partners didn’t show up, the two were paired together. The two clicked instantly and after attending prom together their senior year they became inseparable.

“We had been dating for more than five years before the engagement and became each other’s best friend over that time,” said the groom-to-be. “While we have our separate outlets, there is so much that we love to do in common, which really helps us grow stronger.”

Nicholas proposed to Rachel on Christmas Eve in Hilton Head, South Carolina, at his parent’s beach house, also their “happy place.” It’s the place where their stress fades away and even the place Nicholas told Rachel he loved her for the first time! What could possibly be more romantic than that?

Nicholas told Rachel they were getting ready for Christmas Eve mass with his family and they were going to go down to the beach to take a family picture before leaving. When they arrived at the beach it was just the two of them and their dog, while the rest of the family hid in the dunes to watch. As soon as Nicholas got down on one knee and asked for Rachel’s hand (after Rachel said yes!) champagne, photos and cheers followed.

“I knew Rachel was the one for me because we can make light out of any situation, nothing about our relationship is force fed, it seems to come natural,” said Nicholas. “We know each other inside and out and I can’t picture life any other way.”

Earlier this spring, the couple met a photographer in downtown Columbia for an outdoor, boho inspired engagement shoot. The couple spent a lot of their relationship in Columbia. Not only did Nicholas spend four years of undergrad at University of South Carolina, but he spent the past two years there getting his MBA, as well.

Rachel wore the perfect white lace romper with a boho feel thanks to its flare sleeves. Nicholas kept it simple and classic in a button up and dress pants. They walked along bridges and cuddled up beneath Spanish moss filled trees.

We can’t wait to see their wedding with Something Perfect at the Mint Museum Uptown wedding in Charlotte this July!
