Sarah Chick + Patrick Downs | Mar 17, 2018
It’s a love story that could have started years before but it took Facebook to connect Sarah and Patrick who grew up ten miles apart and went to the same high school. Years later, Sarah sent a message a random Facebook message to Patrick (she had always thought he was a cutie but never had the opportunity to tell him all those years back in high school). At the time, Sarah was living in Syracuse, New York, while Patrick was living in North Carolina, where he had been living for about ten years. That first message led to another which led to countless hours of phone conversations, e-mailing, non-stop messaging, Skype dates, and finally a plane ticket. Sarah and Patrick knew they had something special and it wasn’t long before Sarah moved down South for good!
Around the end of October 2017, Sarah and Patrick went on a road trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, to see Sarah’s favorite band. Little did she know, that road trip would end with one of the best surprises of her life! The two spent the weekend living it up in Knoxville before heading back to the Raleigh area. On the way home, Patrick suggested they take a detour to Asheville to check out the changing leaves and see some waterfalls. He took Sarah three miles down a one-lane dirt road into the backwoods of the Pisgah National Forest where he then had them hike down a rickety staircase to the base of the gorgeous Court House Falls. Although a little confused, Sarah went with it and they enjoyed taking pictures of the foliage and with each other before heading back to the car. On the way back, Patrick all of a sudden reached for Sarah’s hand and asked her to stop. She turned around to see him down on one knee with a beautiful ring, asking her to marry him! There wasn’t a single other soul around, just the two of them among the forest, and it was a perfect moment that they will both cherish forever!
Sarah and Patrick’s wedding day took place on St. Patrick’s Day at The Barn at Valhalla, a charming venue in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They chose a theme of "woodland fairytale" with a hint of Irish flare. During their ceremony, they had a hand-fasting ritual to symbolize them literally tying the knot and they said their vows and took an oath to each other while placing their hands on a river rock which was taken from the waterfall where Patrick proposed.
The reception space had a whimsical yet vintage feel to it and was decorated to be earthy and romantic, with soft lantern lighting and the nostalgia of old book pages and vintage furniture. Hand-selected driftwood adorned the large reception tables and was placed between candles and on top of homemade table runners made from the pages of books from favorite authors. An old typewriter, oil lanterns and velvet couches added to the feel and it was the perfect mix of comforting yet romantic. To commemorate the memory of both of their late fathers, Sarah and Patrick set aside a table specifically in their honor, along with other family members who were there in spirit. Sarah also had her bouquet bound together by a cuff made from one of her father’s oxford shirts which also served as her “something blue.” The entire day was full of special moments, fun, and laughs, all perfectly captured by Rose Trail Images. From the vows to the first dance, so many memories were made and Sarah and Patrick truly had the best day ever before heading off via a sparkler exit as husband and wife!
Congratulations, Sarah and Patrick!
